This morning James slept in and I reorganized Sean's school shelves. I pulled out his shape sort cards and he got right to work. He did pretty well, considering how long it has been. He knows all of the shapes but he was a little inconsistent about putting them in columns below each other. He kept wanting to line them up sideways or stack them.
Once he was turned back onto the shelves, he picked out a few activity trays on his own. I had put the pouring up, it tends to be a disaster when we have company and I just forgot to put it back.
Next he went for the pasta sort. His fine motor skills have improved dramatically. I remember when he couldn't use these tweezers at all.
Last he took out another favorite, the open/close basket.
The skills he learns with these activities are really carrying over in day to day life. The other day he opened the fridge, took out a bottle of juice, unscrewed the top, and poured himself a drink. I had to hold the bottle before he overflowed his cup, but he was very proud of himself.
Sean's battle cry the past couple of months has been, "My turn!" He wants to do everything himself.
When he was finished with the shelves, we sat and read Chicka, Chicka, Boom, Boom and some Mother Goose rhymes. We finished up with some songs and fingerplays.
Now for another cup of coffee...
