Norse myths

In the Waldorf schools, fourth graders do a block on Norse mythology. It was my intention to do these as a block, but I decided instead to just read them to James. I am in vacation mode and I want to focus this summer on our rhythm and have some fun with art and maybe even take up knitting(again-hopefully with a little more success).

We are reading The Children of Odin by Padraic Colum.

We are both really enjoying it. Sadly, the only real exposure I have had to these myths has been through the PC game Age of Mythology.

We are also referring to the D'aulaire book for pronunciation help and the excellent illustrations.

I'm finding the pictures inspiring and I have a feeling my sketchbook will be brought out of retirement again in the near future.

We're so looking forward to doing the Norse Myths block in the fall. Nic has already read the D'Aulaire's Greek/Roman Mythology book many times over (which I too loved as a child).

When I get the Norse book I'm going to need to hide it away to keep it for that block...so it will be fresh and new.

oooh, that's cool! They do the coolest things at Sam's school, I think (he's in a Waldorf School). Last friday was the Pentecost celebration and the 6th graders got to dance around the maypole. I always wanted to do that!
